Ronald Mackay

Inducted 2022

Two Time Australian Speedcar Champion Ronald Mackay is a key player in the four generation Mackay speedway dynasty, beginning by racing karts while learning on the crew for his famous father Don.

Ron’s Speedcar debut was at Liverpool on June 23, 1968 at just 18 years of age, setting him up for the decade of the ‘70’s that became his playground, claiming the Australian Speedcar Grand Prix in 1971, the Sydney Showgrounds World Derby in 1972, the Australasian Championship in New Zealand in 1974 and five state titles across eight seasons in NSW, SA, QLD and VIC.

He amassed over 85 career feature wins including 41 main event wins at the famed Liverpool Speedway and 23 at the Sydney Showground.

Ron’s career was sadly cut short at just 34 years of age in January 1984, when his car was tee-boned after coming to rest from a series of angry flips at Parramatta. The impact was enough to snap Mackay’s seat belts and he suffered wrist and collarbone breaks and the retinas in his eyes were both dislodged, forcing him to call time on a career that had undoubtedly more chequered flags to be added.
