Phil Herreen
Inducted 2017
Phil Herreen’s racing career started in 1962 in Stockcars and Hotrods, before moving into Super Modifieds, which were the forerunner of today’s Sprintcar class. Placing second in the 1972 Australian Championship, he then switched attention to Speedcars. Victory in a number of state titles were eventually followed by success on the national stage, capped off by a memorable 1992 Australian Speedcar championship win in Adelaide.
Tragedy struck at what was to be Phil’s last ever race meeting before retirement in 1993, when he vaulted the safety fence and suffered a spinal cord injury that left him in a wheelchair. His subsequent work within the community saw him recognised as Senior Australian of the Year in 2007, and he was an enthusiastic early supporter of the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame.
