SPEEDWAY AUSTRALIA - MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA FAQ'S
The news that Speedway Australia is now a “delegated authority of Motorsport Australia” is a major breakthrough for Speedway racing in our nation, realigning Speedway with the recognised motorsport body in Australia.
This relationship now establishes Speedway as a legitimate sport at a local, state and federal government level, opening the door to significant opportunities for funding and credibility in the national sporting marketplace.
Understandably, this alliance also raises questions about Motorsport Australia’s involvement in Speedway from this point on, so here’s some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to help everyone understand the value of this agreement.
Q: “Will this cause an increase in license or track permit fees?”
A: No. Speedway Australia remains autonomous, meaning we remain completely in control of Speedway Australia sanctioned events. The relationship creates the opportunity to utilise Motorsport Australia’s position as the recognised Motorsport body in Australia with all levels of government. The relationship has no effect on any license or permit fee.
Q: “Will Motorsport Australia have influence on decisions made by Speedway Australia?”
A: Motorsport Australia has no influence over decisions made by Speedway Australia for the purpose of speedway competition. This relationship now facilitates networking and conversation with all the other motorsport disciplines who also have aligned with Motorsport Australia. We now have a direct connection to share ideas, insights and resources with Karting Australia, Australian National Drag Racing Association and Motorcycling Australia.
Q: “Is FIA Racing Rules and Regulations now going to be implemented for Speedway racing?”
A: No. Speedway Australia’s current racing rules and regulations will continue to be upheld for all Speedway Australia permitted racing events.
Q: “Do we now run events under Motorsport Australia/FIA rules?”
A: No. Speedway Australia’s current racing rules and regulations will continue to be upheld for all Speedway Australia permitted racing events.
Q: “What does it mean for Speedway Australia to be a part of the Australian Motorsport Council (AMC) ?
A: The primary benefit of our relationship with Motorsport Australia is that Speedway in Australia is now a federally recognised community sport. Prior to this relationship being forged, Speedway in our nation was essentially on its own, resulting in our clubs lacking the accreditation, credibility and support to access government resources and assistance. Now, we will be listed alongside all of the other major sporting codes on a local, state and federal level. Speedway Australia now has a Board Position on the AMC giving Speedway a voice on collaborative decisions made about motorsport in Australia.”
Q: “As a racer, do I now have to replace my SFI approved safety equipment with FIA approved safety equipment?
A: No. Although we do acknowledge FIA approved safety equipment along with SFI approved safety equipment, Speedway Australia’s safety rules and regulations are formed specifically for the purpose of speedway racing in Australia. Speedway Australia’s racing rules and regulations will remain the authority on the safety equipment used in our sport.
Q: “Will Motorsport Australia have input into track safety requirements?”
A: No.
Q: “Does this new relationship effect insurance coverage for Speedway Australia permitted events and Speedway Australia licensed individuals?”
A: No. Speedway Australia’s insurance coverage is negotiated directly and autonomously with our insurance brokers (Gallagher Insurance.) Our insurance coverage is not connected to any other motorsport body in Australia.
The decision to align with Motorsport Australia was made with every venue, license holder and fan in mind, and Speedway Australia is proud to be cementing our sport’s position on the national motorsport stage.
This is a significant step forward in speedway being acknowledged for its multi-billion dollar contribution to the nation’s economy, and establishing our presence for the generations to come.
